Gas Appliance Installation in Adelaide: What's Involved and What You Need to Know
Getting a new gas appliance installed isn't as simple as plugging it in. Whether it's a gas cooktop, oven, heater or outdoor BBQ point, all gas appliance installations in Adelaide must be carried out by a licensed gas fitter. It's a legal requirement, and for good reason.
In this guide, we'll cover the most common types of gas appliance installations we do, what's involved in each, and what a gas compliance certificate means for you as a homeowner.
Why Gas Appliance Installation Requires a Licensed Gas Fitter
In South Australia, it's illegal to install, disconnect or modify any gas appliance or gas line unless you hold a current gas fitting licence. This applies to everything from connecting a freestanding oven to running a new gas line to an outdoor kitchen.
The reason is straightforward. Gas leaks, incorrect connections or poorly ventilated installations can lead to carbon monoxide exposure, fire or explosion. A licensed gas fitter ensures the installation meets current Australian Standards, the gas pressure is correct, connections are leak-tested, and ventilation requirements are met.
At Richardson Plumbing and Gas, all gas work is carried out under gas fitting licence PGE 314187. Every installation includes a gas compliance certificate, which is your written confirmation that the work has been completed safely and to code.
Common Gas Appliance Installations
Here's a breakdown of the gas installations we regularly carry out across Adelaide's southern and western suburbs.
Gas cooktop installation
Installing a gas cooktop involves more than just connecting a hose. We need to make sure there's a suitable gas point in the right location, the gas pressure matches the appliance requirements, and the connection is properly sealed and tested.
If your kitchen doesn't currently have a gas point where you need one, we can run a new gas line and install a gas bayonet fitting. This is common during kitchen renovations or when switching from electric to gas cooking.
Gas oven installation
Gas ovens require a dedicated connection, and the installation needs to account for the type of oven (freestanding or built-in), the gas point location, and adequate ventilation.
If you're replacing a gas oven with a newer model, it's usually a straightforward swap. If you're installing one for the first time or changing the oven's location, we'll need to assess the gas supply and may need to run additional pipework.
Gas heater installation
Gas heaters, whether flued, unflued or ducted, each have specific installation requirements around clearances, flue sizing and ventilation.
Flued gas heaters need a correctly sized flue that vents combustion gases outside. Getting this wrong is one of the main causes of carbon monoxide issues in homes. Unflued heaters have strict room size and ventilation requirements that must be met for safe operation.
If you're having a new gas heater installed, or replacing an old unit, we'll make sure the installation meets all current requirements and provide a gas compliance certificate on completion.
If you already have a gas heater, regular servicing is just as important as a proper installation. We've written a separate guide on how often you should service your gas heater in South Australia that covers what's involved.
BBQ and outdoor gas point installation
Running a gas line to an outdoor kitchen or BBQ area is one of the more popular installations we do, particularly heading into warmer months. It involves extending the gas supply from your meter to the outdoor area and installing a gas bayonet fitting that you can connect your BBQ to.
The gas line needs to be sized correctly for the distance and the appliance's gas demand, and the bayonet fitting needs to be positioned safely away from combustible materials.
Gas hot water system installation
If you're replacing an old gas storage system or upgrading to a continuous flow unit, the installation involves connecting gas supply, water lines and, for continuous flow systems, checking the electrical connection for the PCB board.

What Is a Gas Compliance Certificate?
A gas compliance certificate is a legal document issued by the licensed gas fitter who carried out the work. It confirms that the gas installation has been completed in accordance with Australian Standards and South Australian regulations.
You should receive a gas compliance certificate for any gas work carried out in your home, including new installations, appliance replacements, gas line extensions and repairs to gas pipework.
Keep your gas compliance certificates filed safely. They can be important for home insurance claims, property sales and building inspections. If you've had gas work done and weren't provided with a certificate, that's a concern worth following up.
What to Expect When You Book a Gas Appliance Installation
Every job is slightly different, but here's a general idea of how the process works.
We'll start with a site assessment to look at your existing gas supply, the location of the installation, and any pipework that might need to be run or modified. From there, we'll provide upfront pricing based on the scope of work.
On the day, we'll carry out the installation, test all connections for leaks, check gas pressure, and make sure the appliance is operating correctly. You'll receive a gas compliance certificate once the work is complete.
If anything unexpected comes up during the job, we'll discuss it with you before proceeding.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install a gas appliance myself?
No. All gas appliance installations in South Australia must be carried out by a licensed gas fitter. This includes connecting freestanding cookers, gas heaters and BBQs. Working on gas without a licence is illegal and dangerous.
How do I know if my home has a gas supply?
Look for a gas meter on the outside of your property. If you have one, you have a gas supply. If you don't currently have gas connected but want to explore the option, your gas retailer can arrange a new connection to the mains.
Do I need a gas compliance certificate for replacing a gas appliance?
Yes. Any time a gas appliance is installed, replaced, disconnected or reconnected, a gas compliance certificate should be issued by the licensed gas fitter who did the work.
Can you run a new gas line to my kitchen or outdoor area?
Yes. We regularly extend gas lines for kitchen renovations, outdoor kitchens and BBQ areas. The process involves assessing the best route for the pipework, sizing the line correctly, and installing and testing the new gas point.
What's the difference between a gas plumber and a gas fitter?
In practical terms, a gas fitter is a plumber who holds an additional gas fitting licence. This means they're qualified to work on both plumbing and gas systems. At Richardson Plumbing and Gas, Ryan holds both a plumbing licence and gas fitting licence (PGE 314187).
